Tire Maintenance

A recent report from the Automobile Club of Southern California stated that as long as you maintain your vehicle's tires, ensuring they are in good working condition, you will be able to continue good fuel economy and even extend the life of your vehicle.

When you hear the name AAA, the first thing that comes to one's mind are maps and emergency road service. These two features are the cornerstones of the organization. A little research will show that these days AAA is known for much more; including - assisting people in many facets of their lives, including travel and lodging; auto buying, leasing, renting, and repair; financial services such as loans and credit cards; and insurance needs.

Through all of AAA's services, one will often find automobile maintenance and safety on the top of their list.  Showing their customers how to save money while maintaining both is their goal.  Tire maintenance could not be more important to their mission. This is in accordance and with regards to the National Tire Safety Week.

The primary goal of National Tire Safety Week is to educate drivers on the importance of tire care. In a previously RMA-sponsored survey, 61 percent of drivers earned a grade of "D" or lower on a basic tire safety quiz. Only 34 percent of drivers knew the proper place to check for the recommended tire pressure for their vehicles' tires. Even fewer, 28 percent knew how often their vehicle's tires should be rotated. In spite of these low awareness numbers, 97 percent of drivers felt that maintenance of their tires was at least somewhat important.

Aside from this, the fact remains that proper tire maintenance needs to happen. Engineer Steve Mazor, the southern California Auto Club's principal automotive engineer states, "Not knowing the condition of your vehicle's tires is equal to pouring money down the drain. Proper tire inflation is necessary to for safe driving and to reduce gas costs." He continued, "Under inflated tires can cut fuel economy by up to two percent per pound of pressure below the recommended level. During each gas fill up, motorists should walk around their vehicles and check tires for uneven and excessive tread wear and proper inflation. Should a driver be unsure of what pressure their tires should have, they can refer to their vehicle's doorjamb or glove box for original specifications or the manufacturer of the replacement tire for tire pressure inflation."

Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) state that nearly one out of every three vehicles on the roads and highways has a significant under inflated tire. In addition, improperly inflated tires account for some 600 fatalities and around 33,000 injuries every year. These low tire pressure related crashes can be prevented with a little tire maintenance.
